The Air Crew Training project, a U.S. Navy government initiative recognized as the Best Project of the Year, included a Heat Recovery System, Heating Hot Water and Chilled Water Central Plants, Computer Room Air Conditioning Systems, Fan Coils, Refrigeration Systems, and more.

PMPE Consultants delivered comprehensive mechanical engineering services, including HVAC and plumbing system design and construction management, for this award-winning project. The project featured advanced HVAC systems specifically designed to optimize performance in a critical training environment.

Several hydronic systems have been implemented in educational, governmental and health care projects, including central heating hot water and chilled water systems, in combination with air handling units, fan coils, and variable air volume (VAV) systems. In recent years, in pursuit of NetZero Energy goals and reduced carbon emissions, PMPE has adopted a policy to integrate all-electric systems into projects, including hydronic systems such as chiller heat pumps with heat recovery, providing both hot and chilled water.

Throughout construction, the PMPE Consultants team regularly visits the project site to ensure the project is completed on time, in accordance with the construction documents, and within budget.

For certain projects, simple Package Unit Systems have proven to be the most cost-effective and user-friendly solution, as illustrated by the examples below. One such project, the new K-8 School at Beacon Park, was a standout success and led to PMPE Consultants being awarded three additional similar projects.

Other projects, such as Bell Junior High School, were better suited for package DX cooling, combined with a heating hot water central plant and variable air volume (VAV) boxes for each zone.

Our team consistently visits the site and collaborates with the design team, owners, contractors, and project inspectors throughout the construction process to ensure the project's success. We are committed to maintaining a high standard of care at every stage.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

The core team at PMPE Consultants is LEED Accredited and highly knowledgeable about the U.S. Green Building LEED rating system. We specialize in incorporating its requirements into the design of plumbing and HVAC systems to achieve LEED certification. Several of our projects have earned LEED certification at Silver, Gold, and Platinum levels.

One of our notable LEED Platinum-certified projects is the San Elijo Visitor Center in California. This project earned the required points across several categories, including Energy and Atmosphere, Indoor Environmental Quality, Location and Transportation, Water Efficiency, Materials and Resources, Sustainable Sites, Innovation, Regional Priority, and Integrative Process.

Every project begins with performing a Life Cycle Cost Analysis, and for remodeling projects, an assessment of existing conditions is conducted to determine the most energy-efficient, maintenance-friendly, practical, and economical HVAC and plumbing system to implement.

Many remodeling projects are well-suited for the installation of a Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) system with heat recovery, which allows for simultaneous heating and cooling in all zones. Clark Middle School is an example of a successful VRF implementation that delivers exceptional comfort and energy efficiency.

PMPE Consultants is recognized for providing solutions and designs for some of the most challenging projects, particularly those with space constraints for HVAC and plumbing equipment, as well as in extreme weather conditions. A recent example of a successful project is the Mess Hall at the Marine Corps Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, California, where temperatures reached as low as minus 20°F. The project required all systems to utilize 100% outside air for several Type 1 kitchen hood make-up air systems.

Additional requirements included, but were not limited to, a glycol system, greasy waste collection, liquid propane gas distribution, compressed air, air handling units with evaporators and heating hot water coils, and a complete Direct Digital Control (DDC) system.

Throughout the design and construction phases, the PMPE team made multiple site visits, as is our standard practice, to ensure the coordination of construction documents and to ensure the project was completed on time and within budget.
